F’dibattitu fil-Parlament Ewropew, l-Ewroparlamentari Laburista Daniel Attard appella lill-Unjoni Ewropea biex tkun konsistenti fil-mod kif tittratta l-kunflitti globali, waqt li insista li d-diplomazija tibqa’ l-aktar għodda effettiva għall-paċi dejjiemi.
Bħala Viċi President tad-Delegazzjoni Ewropea għall-Iran, Attard saħaq li biex tkun kredibbli, l-Unjoni Ewropea trid tapplika l-prinċipji tagħha b’mod konsistenti, mhux b’mod selettiv skont l-interessi ġeopolitiċi.
“Għax filwaqt li korrettament nikkundannaw l-azzjonijiet tal-Iran, sfortunatament nibqgħu siekta meta l-vjolenza mill-Istat tiġi ppreżentata bħala difiża tat-territorju.”
Attard għalhekk insista li kwalukwe pożizzjoni tal-Unjoni Ewropea trid tkun ħielsa minn standards doppji.
L-Ewroparlamentari Laburista tkellem ukoll fuq il-bżonn li d-diplomazija tibqa’ fiċ-ċentru tal-isforzi Ewropej għall-paċi.
F’dan il-kuntest, Dr Attard ikkonkluda li filwaqt li s-sanzjonijiet jibqgħu meħtieġa, m’għandhomx jintużaw f’iżolament. Id-diplomazija, anki fl-iktar ċirkostanzi diffiċli, tibqa’ l-aktar triq b’saħħitha għall-paċi dejjiemi fil-Lvant Nofsani u lil hinn.

MEP Daniel Attard calls for consistency and diplomacy in decisions on global conflicts
During a plenary debate in the European Parliament, Labour MEP Daniel Attard called on the European Union to adopt a consistent approach in how it handles global conflicts, while stressing that diplomacy remains the most effective tool for achieving lasting peace.
As Vice President of the European Delegation for Iran, Attard emphasized that for the European Union to maintain its credibility, it must apply its principles consistently, rather than selectively based on geopolitical interests.
“While we rightly condemn Iran’s actions, we unfortunately remain silent when state violence is presented as a form of territorial defense,” Attard remarked.
He insisted that any EU position must be free from double standards.
The Labour MEP also highlighted the importance of keeping diplomacy at the heart of Europe’s peace efforts.
In this context, Dr. Attard concluded that while sanctions remain necessary, they should not be used in isolation. “Diplomacy, even in the most difficult circumstances, remains the strongest path to lasting peace in the Middle East and beyond,” he said.
