Dr. Daniel Attard
Member of the European Parliament

Dr. Daniel Attard is a lawyer, diplomat, and politician with a distinguished track record in public service and international diplomacy. He holds a Doctorate in Law (LL.D.) from the University of Malta, where he also completed a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Notary Public. He was admitted to the bar in 2018.

Dr. Attard began his political career as Mayor of Mtarfa, where he gained recognition for his leadership in promoting sustainable development, cultural heritage preservation, and community-driven governance. His tenure established him as a forward-thinking leader committed to delivering tangible improvements for his community.

In diplomacy, Dr. Attard has represented Malta on multiple fronts, including at the Permanent Mission of Malta to the United Nations in Geneva, where he worked on International Labour Organisation matters, and at Malta’s Permanent Representation to the European Union. He also held senior roles as a Government Spokesperson for Foreign and European Affairs, as well as Malta’s Deputy High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, where he also served as Chargé d’Affaires.

In 2024, Dr. Attard was elected as a Member of the European Parliament with the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, marking a new chapter in his commitment to public service and advancing Malta’s interests at the European level.

 

Roles in the European Parliament

Dr. Attard is a full member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN), where he focuses on policies affecting the maritime and aviation sectors, as well as the promotion of sustainable tourism. As part of his work on the Tourism Task Force Steering Group, he advocates for a forward-looking and inclusive approach to tourism policy that strengthens European competitiveness while addressing sustainability challenges. These priority areas reflect Malta’s strategic importance as an island nation with a strong reliance on transport and tourism industries.

He also serves as Vice President of the Delegation for relations with Iran, a position that places him at the forefront of the European Parliament’s engagement with one of the world’s most geopolitically sensitive regions. His work in this role centers on fostering dialogue, diplomacy, and cooperation to address complex global challenges.

In addition, Dr. Attard is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research, and Energy (ITRE), contributing to key discussions on energy transition, industrial competitiveness, and innovation. He is also a member of the Committee on Regional Development (REGI), where he engages in policy discussions on EU cohesion and sustainable regional development.

Dr. Attard represents the ITRE Committee on the European Parliament’s Petitions Network, ensuring that citizen concerns in areas such as energy, research, and industry are addressed effectively.

Lastly, he is a member of the Delegation for relations with the countries of South East Asia (ASEAN), contributing to the strengthening of partnerships between the EU and countries in this dynamic and fast-growing region.
