The very title of this week’s debate; “The EU’s role in supporting peace efforts for Gaza and a two-state solution”; says it all. It exposes the sorry state of our Union, reduced to an observer on the global stage.
Once again, we are first in line for the photo, but last on policy.
Across the chamber, we even heard colleagues shamelessly attack humanitarian efforts, ridicule the Sumud flotilla, and echo Netanyahu’s talking points instead of defending our own European values. It is unacceptable.
Yes, we welcome every genuine effort towards peace. Yes, we condemn the Hamas terrorist attacks. And yes, we insist on the unconditional release of all hostages. But we must be equally clear: no agreement will erase war crimes, and no deal will bring back a future to the thousands of murdered children.
We want peace, but we demand justice. Because there is no lasting peace without justice.
The European Union must stop happily following others and reducing itself to a passive observer. It must stand up for its own values: implement sanctions, enforce its treaties, and demand compliance with international law.
Otherwise, let us admit it plainly: the EU risks becoming nothing more than the world’s biggest talking shop.
Now, more than ever, Europe must lead with principles, not photos.
